Dr. Marilyn J. Hanley

Dr. Marilyn J. Hanley, age 89, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024, in Castle Pines, Colorado surrounded by love. Marilyn was born on February 8, 1935, in Iowa, the beloved daughter of Ethel Johnson and Gail Smith.

Her father, a superintendent, and her mother, a music teacher, were not only exceptional educators but also inspiring role models who instilled in her a lifelong love of learning, leading Marilyn to earn her doctorate from Denver University (DU), where she met the love of her life, Dennis Hanley. Together, they built a partnership defined by their shared commitment to education and the betterment of their community. As the Assistant Director of the Colorado State Board of Education, Marilyn devoted her career to creating meaningful change, with a unique focus on special education, where her compassion and determination touched countless lives. After retiring and losing Dennis, Marilyn channeled her energy into her family, quietly yet deeply investing in their individual passions and offering unwavering support. Even in her later years, she nurtured her love of learning, continuing to take alumni classes, embodying her belief that growth is a lifelong pursuit. Though a private woman, Marilyn found joy in life’s simplest moments, whether through a meaningful connection with a stranger or quietly reflecting on the world around her. Marilyn taught us to value education, cherish family, and find meaning in small, quiet moments. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered for the extraordinary life she lived and the lives she transformed.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis, and her brother, Robert Smith. She is survived by her children Randy (Martha) Parsley, Diane (Larry) Demmel and Tim (Shannon) Parsley; her sister, Janice Howie; along with 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Marilyn’s family will forever hold her wisdom, compassion, and presence in their hearts.

Her memorial service will be held on Friday, February 7th, 1:30 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd, Denver, CO 80236. Please arrive at Staging Area A at 1:15 PM. This special gathering takes place the day before what would have been her 90th birthday, a poignant reminder of the vibrant life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer's Association or her beloved church, Journey Colorado.

A heart-felt thank you to Choice Hospice and Legacy Village, especially the CNA's, nurses and caregivers for their unwavering care of Marilyn in her final months.
