Susan Lynne “Susie” Chessy was born on July 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in North Denver, Colorado. On February 27, 2025, Susie passed away peacefully at home in La Veta, Colorado, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her daughter, Sydney Jo Moruzzi (Kauffman), son-in-law, James Kauffman, her granddaughter, Katelyn Jo Palumbo, and her sister, Claudia Gieg. She was preceded in death by her mother, Flora Rosella Stutzman, her father, Maurice Chesy, and her brother, Bruce Chesy.
In the 1970s, Susie came to the Huerfano Valley and fell in love with its beauty and spirit. After dreaming of making it her home, she finally moved to La Veta, in the 1990s, where she spent her days surrounded by flowers, the mountains, and the people she cherished.
So many fond memories make it hard to choose, but one summer day at the Dog Bar, she jumped the railing—tequila in hand—landed on her feet and didn’t spill a drop! She had such strength in a small package, a kind and giving heart, the snappiest firecracker that made us giggle and go crazy.
A devoted mom, grandmother, fairy godmother, and friend, always ready for good conversation and a little adventure. Her warmth, her smile, and love for life will be deeply missed. She leaves a legacy of love and the reminder to embrace life’s simple joys. Her sparky personality, her wild style, her loving honesty, her laugh, her everything. Her powerful presence will be carried with us always.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor her memory by enjoying nature, sharing kindness and stories with a neighbor, soaking in hot springs, or sitting in the sun and appreciating the day.
